  • Republican U.S. Senate hopeful Rand Paul made a quick stop Monday in Shelbyville at WJ Andriot’s on Main Street during his bus tour across the commonwealth.

Paul was the big draw, but he brought along U.S. Rep. (R-Bowling Green) Brett Guthrie and host of state and local leaders and politicians.

Paul took time to address the small after-lunch crowd of about 30 or 40 residents, stressing his vision as the key to the election and the country.

The passing of Robert Wilson will leave a deep void in the hearts of those who knew him, especially in Simpsonville, Simpsonville Mayor Steve Eden said.

“He was a fine gentleman who did so much to help his community, and he will surely be missed around here,” Eden said.

  • Residents in the Clay Village area were rocked back on their heels Monday afternoon when Mark Stiff, the owner of the Bluegrass Country Depot and a vibrant community leader, was found dead in his truck, the victim of a massive heart attack.

Stiff, 53, had in five years made the Country Depot and himself beloved and essential parts of this small community by offering what residents called good food and a social atmosphere where the community could bond.

Shelby County lost two of its oldest and most-beloved residents on Monday.

  • It was a night of firsts at Collins High School on Friday.

The Shelby County Rockets wore their away whites, but they didn’t leave the county. Collins played host to what was likely the largest crowd ever to watch a high school football game in the county -- a packed house.

Both schools treated the contest almost as if it were a home game, with both bands performing at the half and the dance teams even doing a combined performance. And fans tailgated for hours before the game and waited in long lines to enter.
