    From June 30 through mid-August 1943, the Third Division was transported from its 22 camps in New Zealand to Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands.

    Guadalcanal, captured by the First Marine Division in an amphibious attack the previous August, was now available as a staging area for further assaults.

  • No longer forgotten

    The men of the 5th United States Colored Cavalry (USCC) buttoned up tight and moved through the snow, half in front, half in the rear of some 900 cattle they were taking to Louisville.

    The date was Jan. 25, 1865. It was a cold morning to be out driving livestock across Kentucky. The regiment was made up of around 80 soldiers, most of whom had joined the military as a way out of slavery.

    It was winter, the cold was to be expected, but the attack that was suddenly waged on them was not.

  • Local DJs make Hall of Fame

    Four local DJs will be inducted into the DJ Hall of Fame at a ceremony in Bardstown tonight.

    William “Daddy D” Murphy, Robert “Big Rob” Marshall, Anthony “DJ Smurf” Beckley, and John “DJ Master Rocker” Foree Jr. have a combined total of more than 100 years of experience in rocking the microphone and getting the party started.

  • Community Theatre announces next season

     Two musical productions based on popular children’s books headline the schedule for The Shelby County Community Theatre’s 2009-2010 season.

    The Secret Garden, based on the novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett, and Seussical, Jr., based on the work by Dr. Seuss will lead off the schedule, starting in July.

  • Shelby girl tours nation with Broadway hit

     Ruby Lewis skipped baby steps and quickly went to giant leaps in her performance career.

      At just 3 or 4 years old, she started singing at United Methodist Church here in Shelbyville. In an interview with The Sentinel-News when she was just 12 years old, she said she hoped to one day sing and dance on Broadway.

  • Obama's appointee comes from strong Marine lineage

    President-elect Barack Obama has recently nominated Marine Corps General James L. Jones, Jr. to be his National Security Advisor.

    In this position Jones will head the National Security Council, which has the function of advising and assisting the President on national security and foreign policies and coordinating these policies among various government agencies.

    His uncle, William K. "Bill" Jones, was a contemporary of mine in the Marine Corps.  And this is the story of the elder Jones.

  • First whiff of Flower in the winter

    Do not be confused: Flower is the first name (she only goes by one name like Cher or Madonna) of our resident skunk this year.  I haven’t actually smelled her around the farm lately. I smelled someone else on my way home one evening.  It was a welcomed warning smell, so we can be prepared. 

    Don’t get me wrong, I don’t dislike Flower, I just want to be on alert when the mating season begins.

  • A few moments with Kim Embrey

    A country girl at heart, she moved to Shelby County from Indiana to run the Multi-Purpose Communication Action Agency, and that left her a bit homesick. But Shelby Countians are easing that pain.

    Kim Embrey has fond childhood memories of chasing pigs around her family's farm and going horseback riding.

    In September, she moved away from her hometown of Tell City, Ind., to take a job in Shelbyville.
