Sarah Downes, an eighth grade student at Our Lady of Guadalupe Academy in Simpsonville, won the school-level competition of the National Geographic Bee on Jan. 14. The Bee is sponsored by the National Geographic Society.
Downes will now take a written test. Up to 100 of the top scorers in each state will be eligible to compete in their state bee April 4.

Kentucky students who plan to attend an in-state college or university in the fall should file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as soon as possible. Students who file early have a better chance of receiving a state need-based grant administered by the Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority (KHEAA). The FAFSA is available at www.fafsa.ed.gov.

Feb. 2 -- The Cooperative Extension Service is sponsoring a short walk at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at the Family Activity Center. Participants will receive a free pass to the Family Activity Center.
