  • Tests are just one measure of learning

    For teachers in Shelby County and across the state, the next few months can be pressure-packed as the CATS assessment looms. Students will practice Open Response Questions, fill in multiple choice bubbles, and memorize acronyms in preparation for the stressful week of standardized testing.

    The best thing we can do, however, is to take a deep breath and understand that state testing is just one way of measuring the success of a school. Or at least it should be part of a more balanced approach.

  • Scholarship deadline approaching

    McDonalds Restaurants of Kentuckiana will award 10, $1,000 scholarships as a part of their Black History Makers of Tomorrow program.

    The program, which is in its fourth year, recognizes high school juniors and seniors who demonstrate exceptional leadership, character, academic achievement and community service. All applications must be postmarked no later than Jan. 12, 2008.

    Applications are available from high school guidance counselors or online at McState.com. Click on your state and select a city for a restaurant nearest you to download a BHMOT application.
