  • Students observe Government Day

Last week, local students from the Young Leaders Institute 2008-2009 observed Government Day by visiting state and local government officials.

The students asked officials about their roles in government, as well as about the community and issues specific to their lives.

To get a feel for politics, students participated in role-playing exercises as members of the House of Representatives, passing a piece of proposed legislation, and also as magistrates for Shelby County Fiscal Court.

  • Pearl Harbor still memorable

On a peaceful Sunday morning nearly 67 years ago, 35 servicemen were having a leisurely breakfast at Hickman Airfield at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

Before they knew what had happened, the mess hall took a direct attack from Japanese fighter planes.

    All were killed.

But that was only the beginning – for both of the attack and of its ramifications for history.

  • Fired Up

Some of his friends smile when they hear his name mentioned. Some call him a character.

But whatever you call him, when you call him to come through for his community, he will be there.

Elmer Brown, former Waddy fire chief, is still a familiar face around the firehouse. He has been a volunteer firefighter at Waddy since 1975, with a 2-year stint as chief in the 1980s.

“It gets in your blood,” he said, with a crooked grin for which he is famous far beyond the fringes of Waddy.

  • Happy birthday, Barbie!

"I'm a Barbie girl, in a Barbie world

    Life in plastic, it's fantastic!"

-- "Barbie Girl" 1997, by Danish-Norwegian pop group, Aqua.

Barbie, the shapely fashion doll of toy box fame, turned 50 Monday.

Always controversial, she is both praised and condemned: Praised for the new grown-up play she has brought to little girls worldwide. Condemned for the unrealistic standards of body image she has imposed on little girls worldwide.

  • Play it again, Chester

Chester Slaughter describes himself as a humble man.

    Those who know him agree.

But when he is armed with his bass guitar, his humility is outshined by his obvious musical talent.

For more than 30 years Slaughter was a member of the famous Moonlighters, playing bass for them from 1965 until 1997, when the roup  disbanded.
