    Pamela Federspiel (right), director of the Shelby County Public Library, presents a Kindle e-reader to Mary Nelson, whose name was drawn from among 146 entries during the celebration of National Library Week at SCPL.

  • Locks of Love

    Great clips collected locks of love during the month of April. Participants donated their locks of 10 inches or longer and received a free hair cut. Locks of Love is a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children under age 21 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. Hairdressers were (from left) Tina Poppleton, Laverne Sanford, Lou Ann Hawkins, Donna Taylor and Barbra Miller with Locks of Love donations.

  • Shopping on Highway 55

    The annual Highway 55 Yard Sale, with the hub being the Finchville Community Center in Finchville, endured a cold and rainy Saturday this past weekend, which was part of the event’s 4-day run. The sale, which stretches across the county and beyond, encourages others to set up sales, too. The First Christian Church, for instance, also had a community-wide yard sale that day. The turnout was brisk at Finchville.

  • Armed forces news: Graduates training course

    Army Pfc. Ronnie F. Payton-Sewell graduated from the Basic Field Artillery Cannon Crewmember Advanced Individual Training course at Fort Sill, Lawton, Okla.

    He is the son of April V. Sewell of Shelbyville and Ronnie L. Payton of Frankfort. His wife, Shelly, is the daughter of Angela May of Frankfort. He is a 2011 graduate of Franklin County High School in Frankfort.

  • Birth: Elmore son

    Joey Elmore and Amy Banta of Bethlehem announce the birth of their first child, a son, on Feb. 3, 2012 at Central Baptist Hospital Lexington. He has been named Rylee Daniel Elmore. He weighed 7 pounds 9 ounces and was 19 1/4 inches long.

    Grandparents are Joyce and Melvin Patterson of Harrisonville, Joseph Elmore of Louisville, and Mary Roberts of Bethlehem.

  • Wedding: Maekita-Andrews

    Yoshino Maekita of Yokohama, Japan, and Jared Andrews of Riverside, Calif., were married April 2, 2012, in Riverside.

    Parents of the bride are Kayoko and Mitsuru Maekita. She attended Nihon University College of Arts in Japan.

    The groom is the son of Pam and Al Andrews. He is a graduate of Shelby County High School and graduated from the University of California School of Music in 2010.

    The couple resides in Riverside, Calif.

  • Engagement: Wolf-Feole

    Walter and Sarah Wolf of Center, N.D., announce the engagement of their daughter, Erika Wolf, to Ian Feole, both of Grand Forks, N.D. He is the son of John and Merrie Feole of Shelbyville.

    They are both graduates of the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks.

    The wedding will take place at 4:30 p.m. June 23, 2012, at St. Peter in Hannover, N.D.

  • Engagement: Liles-Kees

    Roch and Marlene Liles of South Portsmouth announce the engagement of their daughter, Emily Liles, to Jack Kees of Shelbyville. He is the son of Frank and Judy Kees of Shelbyville.

    She will graduate in 2012 with a Bachelor of Science degree from Murray State University. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree with majors in communication, journalism and business from Morehead State University.

    A June wedding is planned at First Baptist Church in Shelbyville.

  • Birth: Gaston daughter

    Scooter and Tia Gastonof Shelbyville announce the birth of their second child, a daughter, on March 17, 2012 at Norton Suburban in Louisville. She has been named Avery Madilynn Gaston. She was born at 10:32 a.m., weighing 6 pounds, 8 ounces and was 19 inches long. She has an older sister, 4-year-old Allie Madison.

    Grandparents are Steve and Rhonda Bradley of Shelbyville, Patti Gaston of Shelbyville, Don and Wanda Gaston of Ashland, Ala.

    Great-grandparents Don and Sue Bradley of Shelbyville.
