  • Relay for Life steps off on Saturday

    During the local American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life, which begins at noon Saturday at Shelby County High Schools, participants will have the chance to remember loved ones and honor those battling cancer.

    After sunset at each of the Relay For Life events nationwide, luminaries decorated with the names of those who have battled cancer are lit and left glowing throughout the night to remind everyone of the incredible importance of their contributions.

  • 50th anniversary: Arnolds

    Rochelle Arnold Jr. and the former Catherine Chambers were married May 6, 1963, in Shelbyville.

    Her father, the late Rev. James R. Chambers, performed the marriage ceremony. Her mother is the late Genevieve Brown Chambers. She graduated from Lincoln Institute in 1961 and received a Bachelor of Science in computer information systems from Athens State University. She retired from AT&T in Birmingham, Ala., after 33 years of service.

  • Armed Forces: Phoebus

    Matthew Phoebus, a graduate of Shelby County High School, was promoted to staff sergeant in the U.S. Army.

    SSgt Phoebus is assigned to the 1/32nd Cavalry in the 101st Air Assault Division at Fort Campbell.

    The son of Chris and Brenda Phoebus, he is serving his second tour in Afghanistan.

  • Collins students send care package

    Students from Collins High School collected items for care packages to Pvt. II Joshua Whittle and his platoon in Afghanistan with the National Guards. Whittle graduated from CHS last year. Bekaert Corp. in Shelbyville became involved by being a community partner with the PLTW (Project Lead The Way) engineering program, in which Whittle took three classes. Bakaert will sponsor the senior service project by providing help during the event as well as providing pizzas for the senior celebration afterward.

  • Roadrunners rest

    Shelby County Roadrunners enjoyed an outing at the Shelbyville Country Club after competing in the Kentucky Derby Festival marathon/mini marathon in April.

  • Engagement: Hensley-Petrey

    Greg and Elizabeth Hensley announce the engagement of their daughter, Jaclyn Noel Hensley, to Kevin Franklin Petrey of Richmond. He is the son of Elva W. Petrey of Tennessee and the late Robert Franklin Petrey.

    She was the sister of the late Matthew “Moby” Hensley and granddaughter of the late Willis and Christine Burkhead and the late Rev. A.J. and Pauline Hensley.

    She is a registered nurse at the Jewish Hospital Shelbyville, and he is a purchase officer for Lockheed-Martin in Lexington.

  • Armed Forces: Barnett

    Army National Guard Spec. Alexander T. Barnett graduated from basic combat training at Fort Leonard Wood in Waynesville, Mo.

    He is the son of William and Penny Barnett of South Gethsemane in Corydon, Ind., and grandson of Sue Walls of Taylorsville.

    He is a 2009 graduate of Shelby County High School and received an associate degree in 2012 from Kentucky Christian University in Grayson.
