  • Armed Force News: Allan Ritchey

    Army Pvt. Allan Ritchey has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson in Columbia, S.C.

    The boot camp was completed in 9 weeks.

    Ritchey is the son of Billy Mitchell of Frankfort and is a 2009 graduate of Shelby County High School.

  • Armed Force News: Taylor W. Matthews

    Air Force Airman Taylor W. Matthews graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

    He completed an 8-week program and also earned four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

    Matthews is the son of Kim Matthews of Shelbyville and a 2009 graduate of Shelby County High School.

  • 50th anniversary: JoAnn and Howard Shelburne

    Howard and JoAnn Shewmaker Shelburne of Simpsonville have been married for 50 years. The couple was married on Nov. 2, 1962, by Howard Shelburne’s brother, Rev. Ivan Shelburne, at Taylorsville Christian Church.

    They have one son, Troy Shelburne, who is married to Dana, and one daughter, Melissa Todd and who is married to Jason Todd. All of them live in Taylorsville. They also have five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

    Doug and Kay (Nethery) Witt will have been married for 50 years as of Friday. The couple were married in 1962 by the Rev. Ivan Shelburne Jr. at the Waddy Christian Church.

    He is retired from the former Shelby County Trust Bank, and she is a retired dental hygienist.

    They have a son, Troy Witt, a daughter, Dana Coffey, and two granddaughters, Hailey Coffey and Olivia Coffey, all of Waddy.

  • Horn earns alumni award from Murray

    Murray State University’s Outstanding Alumni of the Fine Arts Award will be presented to Dennis Horn at a dinner on Thursday at the university.

    Horn holds a bachelor of fine arts/teaching degree from Murray, where he received the 1981 President’s Art Award of Excellence. He was the first Murray art student to participate in the university’s off-campus work-study program. He also holds a master of arts in arts administration/community arts management from the University of Illinois at Springfield.

  • Birth: Farmer daughter

    Jessica and David Farmer of Eminence Pike announce the birth of their second child, a daughter, on Sept. 13, 2012, at Baptist East Hospital. She has been named Layla Grace Farmer.

    Born at 7:47 a.m. she weighed 7 pounds and 11 ounces and was 20 ¼inches long. She has a 2-year-old brother, Levi.

    Grandparents are Margaret Biagi Tennill and Donald and Paula Tennill, Elmburg Road; Terry and Roy Farmer, Eminence Pike.
