  • Shelby County grad promoted to colonel

    Lt. Col. Mike Yocum was promoted to the rank of colonel in the U.S. Army during a ceremony Jan. 10 at Fort Belvoir, Va.

    A 1997 graduate of Shelby County High School, he is the son of Jim and Shelby Yocum of Harrodsburg and the nephew of Betty Ritter of Shelbyville.

  • Girl Scouts kickoff celebration

    The Girl Scouts cookie sale kickoff rally was Jan. 19 at the Family Activity Center. More than 200 scouts and adults from Shelby, Oldham and Henry counties gathered to launch a 3-month effort that supports local troops and funds troop service projects, field trips and program projects and the local council as it provides eight camps throughout Kentucky. It also subsidizes special programs for the girls, such as the popular Festival of the Arts, held every November in Louisville.

  • I'm one: Noah Robert Smith

    Noah Robert Smith celebrated his first birthday Jan. 6, 2014.

    He is the son of Ryan and Jessie Smith of Shelbyville.

    Grandparents are Rob and Janevera Rothenburger and Jim and Teresa Smith, all of Shelbyville.

  • Wedding: Cole

    Bethany Christine Nolan and Adam Bryant Cole were married on Sept. 28, 2013, at the Medina Wedding Chapel in Appleton, Wis.

    Nolan is the daughter of Libby King of Austin, Texas. Cole is the son of Timothy and Janice Cole of Appleton and the grandson of Jennie Bryant Cole of Shelbyville.

    The bride was given in marriage by her grandfather, Norm Smith.

    The bridal attendants were Danielle Murphy, Erin Kuehl, Jennifer Cole and Eric Smith.

    The grooms’ attendants were Ryan McMurtrie, Jon Sewall, Danny Cole and Andy Jaloszynski.

  • Woodward complete basic training

    Private Joshua Woodward completed Marine basic training at Parris Island, S.C., and will go on to infantry training in California.

    Woodward, a 2013 Cornerstone Christian Academy, graduate is the son of Andy and Michelle Woodward of Taylorsville. He is one of five siblings, three attending Cornerstone.

    Cornerstone Christian Academy held its Homecoming dance on Saturday night. Queen and King were seniors Callie Rose and Jerrit Brooks.

  • Irick-Redmon wedding

    Emma Caitlin Irick and Austin Lee Redmon were married on Sept. 21 on the bride’s family farm in Mount Vernon, Ohio.

    The couple met during their time at Morehead State University.

    Parents of the bride are Kathy Irick and John Purdy of Troy, Ohio. The groom is the son of Stephen and Veronica Brown of Bagdad.

    The ceremony was officiated by Kyle Wiley, pastor of Bagdad Baptist Church, and the bride’s brother, David Irick.

    The maid of honor was Keight Davis of Louisa, and the best man was John Johnson of Bagdad.

  • SCHS Homecoming queen

    Shelby County High School senior Alex Skellie was named Homecoming queen on Friday during the Rockets' game with Anderson County. She is escorted by Matthew Perry.

  • Watts graduates basic training

    Army National Guard Pfc. Damian H. Watts graduated from basic infantry training at Fort Benning in Columbus, Ga.

    During the 9 weeks of training, Watts received training in drill and ceremonies, weapons, map reading, tactics, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, and Army history, core values and traditions. Additional training included development of basic combat skills and battlefield operations and tactics, and experiencing use of various weapons and weapons defenses available to the infantry crewman.
