    Pleasureville artist chosen for Kentucky Crafted group

    Kathy Conroy of Pleasureville is among 21 Kentucky artists who have been accepted into the Kentucky Crafted Program, the Kentucky Arts Council's marketing assistance program that supports artisans by providing opportunities to expand their professional careers and market reach.

    Artists are adjudicated into the program based on artistic excellence and market readiness as determined by an independent panel of art and craft industry professionals.

    SC3 chosen to perform at Abbey Road on the River

    The Shelby County Community Children’s Choir, commonly called SC3, has been chosen to perform at the 2014 Abbey Road on the River, a celebration of the Beatles that is held in late May.

    The group of elementary- and middle-school-aged students has performed several Beatles songs in its concerts.

    Choir Director James Ray Morgan said in an E-mail to choir members’ families that organizers had seen audition videos and watched SC3 on its YouTube channel.

    Celebration of Lights starts Christmas season

    The Celebration of Lights, the lighting of downtown Shelbyville for the start of the Christmas shopping season, will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Nov. 9.

    The festival, between 3rd and 9th streets in downtown Shelbyville, will include food, crafts, shops open late and the lighting of the Shelbyville Christmas tree at 6 p.m. Performances will be at the Shelby County Courthouse steps, starting at 4 p.m.

    Variety show coming to community theater

    Reggie Van Stockum is bringing together his eclectic group of entertainers for a show at the Shelby County Community Theatre.

    The Reginald Bareham Variety Show will be at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 2 as part of the theater’s Upstairs at 801 Series.

    Featured at the event are the Funky GroundH2O Bluegrass Band and other local singers and musicians.

    Tickets are adults $15, seniors $12 and students $10 and will be available at the door.

    My Band, a group of musicians based in Louisville and managed by Shelby County resident Amy Kaufman, is part of the lineup for Saturday’s Kosair Charities Fall Fest, which takes place at 10 a.m.-11 p.m. on the lawn at 982 Eastern Parkway in Louisville.

    Bookfest returns Wednesday for sale to benefit literacy

    Bookfest, the Friends of the Library’s annual sale of used books and other items to raise money for literacy, opens Wednesday and continues through next Saturday.

    All proceeds from Bookfest, which will be held at Stratton Center, 215 Washington St. in Shelbyville, will go to support the library and The Sentinel-News Newspapers in Education program.

    Army officer, author Herd to talk terror at library

    Retired U.S. Army Col. Walter Herd of Simpsonville, who commanded special operations in Afghanistan and has a new book about what he learned during that time, is headed for a public event at the Shelby County Public Library.

    Herd will appear from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the library, at 309 8th St. in Shelbyville.

  • Shelby authors love to tell their stories

    Writers and published authors in recent years have seemed to spring up in Shelby County like so many tobacco or corn plants, as if our soil suddenly were fertilized with nouns, verbs and adjectives rather than the nitrogen that has made our crops so famous.

    ‘Jack and the Giant’ opens tonight at theater

    Jack and the Giant opens tonight at Shelby County Community Theatre.

    This annual youth production of the classic tale features about 50 youngsters and a couple of not-so-kids: Corey Hall as the giant and Bill Stover as the narrator. The show is  directed by James Ray Morgan.

    Performances are today, Saturday, next Friday and Sept. 21 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday and Sept. 22 at 2:30 p.m.

    “Ghost hunting,” presented by Tom Jones of Kentucky Area Paranormal Society, will be from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Shelby County Public Library, 309 8th St. in Shelbyville.
