A Henry County woman died shortly after an automobile accident that occurred as she headed into Shelbyville Saturday morning, according to Jason Rice, a detective with the Shelby County Sheriff's Office.

Karen Montgomery, 32, was traveling south on Ky. 55,  Eminence Pike just before 6:30 a.m. when her car was struck by a car traveling north.

John Walden, 23, also of Henry County, crossed over the center line and struck Montgomery head on in front of Shady Lawn Cemetery, Rice said. Both were driving maroon Chevy Cavaliers and were the only occupants of their vehicles.

Montgomery, who worked at Colonial Hall Nursing Home in Shelbyville, was transported to Jewish Hospital Shelbyville, where she died a few minutes after arriving, Rice said.

Walden was airlifted to the University of Louisville where he remained in serious condition on Tuesday.

Rice said he did not know at this time why Walden crossed over into the path of Montgomery's car.

“It could be a number of things from alcohol or drug involvement to him falling asleep at the wheel,” he said. “We don't know much right now because there were no witnesses, one driver is dead and the other is in no condition to talk to us. But we are having crash data analyzed and are awaiting toxicology reports.”
