A fight between two female students at the Whitney Young Job Corps Center in Simpsonville on Tuesday ended with one in jail and the other at University Hospital in Louisville.

Celeste Hughes, 18, a resident of Chattanooga, Tenn., has been charged with first-degree assault after allegedly stabbing Kenya Slade, 19, four times with a pair of scissors.

“Basically, there was an altercation between two students, when one [Hughes] produced a pair of scissors, and it appears she stabbed the other student [Slade] four times,” Shelby County Sheriff’s Det. Eric Hettinger said. “She [Slade] last night was in stable condition. I don’t believe she had any life-threatening injuries.”

Hettinger said Wednesday that he was working on putting together witness statements, but it appears that the incident was just an argument that escalated.

“It’s still open for debate,” he said about a motive.

This was an isolated incident at Whitney Young Job Corps Center, Hettinger said.

“There haven’t been many [incidents there] that I’m aware of,” he said. “We haven’t responded to any recently.”

Hughes is being held at the Shelby County Detention Center on a $25,000 cash bond.
