Western Hills slams SCHS softball team

Host Western Hills pounded out 15 hits – and used a pair of 4-run innings – to topple the Shelby County softball team, 11-3, Tuesday in Frankfort.

The Wolverines (3-7) got off to a good start, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning, and kept on rolling against the Rockets (5-9).

Freshman Sydney Wright and seventh-grader Hannah Webb accounted for half of Shelby County’s hits, with two each.

The Rockets, who were scheduled to host Collins on Thursday evening, will play in the Capital City Classic in Frankfort on today and Saturday.

SACRED HEART 6, COLLINS 1:The host Valkyries (11-3 after the game) scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning Tuesday, breaking a scoreless tie.

The Titans (7-9), who were scheduled to play Shelby County on Thursday, will face Franklin County at 5:30 p.m. today in their first game of the Capital City Classic in Frankfort.


BOYS’ TENNIS:SCHS wins; Collins falls

Shelby County swept host Frankfort, 5-0, Wednesday at Kentucky State University.

Junior Ethan Russell won by default at No. 1 singles, and freshman Jeron Russell and sophomore Jimmy Welman were victorious, 6-1, 6-1, at Nos. 2 and 3 singles. At No. 1 doubles junior Doug Martin and senior Zach Brown triumphed, 6-4, 6-2, and sophomore Luke Dove and senior Stuart Orange won, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 2.

Shelby County, which hosted Western Hills on Thursday, hosts Franklin County on Monday.

TRIMBLE COUNTY 3, COLLINS 1:The Titans’ lone victory Monday at Clear Creek Park came at No. 3 singles, where seventh-grader Jared Baltzell triumphed, 6-0, 6-0. The No. 2 doubles match was tied in the third set when the lights went out.

Collins plays at Frankfort on Monday.


GIRLS’ TENNIS: SCHS sweeps Spencer

Shelby County swept host Spencer County, 5-0, Wednesday in Taylorsville.

For the Rockets, junior exchange student Shimizu Manu won 6-4, 7-6 (7-2) at No. 1 singles, junior Hailey Coffey was victorious 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 singles and sophomore Emalee Turley triumphed 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3 singles.

In doubles, Rachel Dove and Yohari Salama outlasted Lauren Stevens and Lindsey Roy 6-7 (2-7), 6-3, 1-0 (10-6) in three sets at No. 1 while Abbey Gowin and Melanie Roley rolled to a 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 2 doubles.  

The Rockets play at Anderson County today.
