As you read this, the Shelby County Rockets already may have played one and be done in the state high school basketball tournament.
We certainly hope that isn’t true – and we don’t expect that it will be – but there’s a 50-50 chance that we must respect.
That said, the accomplishment of this group of seniors at SCHS has been amazing and incredibly motivating.
They have carried proudly the banner of the final year of one high school in Shelby County and brought honor to the school and themselves in the process.
For a few of them, playing in the State Tournament is a repeat from the Rockets’ amazing run to the semifinals in 2008. They understand the wonder and excitement of taking their games onto the largest stage in the state, Rupp Arena, and wearing the blue and gold of SCHS for the final time.
For those who are underclassmen, this is a new and perhaps once-in-a-lifetime experience to be soaked up and treasured in their personal archives.
Next season, they will have a new trail to blaze with the opening of Collins High School. Some of them may write new history as Titans, and some will return to carry on the proud tradition of being Rockets.
And no matter whether we win now or win then, these young people need to know that we as a community are proud of them for their hard work and accomplishment.
And we can say, as one community: Go, Shelby County.
