There are so many firsts these days for Collins High School that perhaps we need to develop a time capsule and put inside it a long list to record them all.
We make this suggestion in the wake of the historic – by several definitions – performance of cross-country runner Caterina Karas.
She became the first state champion for the Titans, overpowering all competitors to win the Class AA championship in Lexington.
And she not only won the race, but she ran those 5 kilometers faster than any girl ever has run them on the course at the Kentucky Horse Park. Her time would have dominated all the other competitive classes.
What a wonderful way to put the first big trophy in the gleaming new case at Collins.
There could be some development time before a team from Collins is in position to compete for a state championship. The football team made a deep and impressive run but came up just short this year.
So for now that means that individuals such as Ms. Karas will carry the banner of the school by themselves.
We hope Ms. Karas wears her new role with pride.
Her state record likely someday will be broken, but nothing ever can diminish being the first Titan to win a state championship.
