Lost among the sparkles and thunder of the Independence Day weekend were the unselfish contributions of citizens who made sure Shelby Countians could celebrate the right way.
If you recall, the Parks Board had announced it would not have a fireworks show this year because it was too expensive and too lightly attended. Too many citizens watched from their patios and decks, it seems.
But in stepped Gabe and Tracey Giordano, who underwrote the cost of the fireworks, and Donna and Gilmore Dutton, who added the cost of music and fun stuff for the kids.
The show went on.
Shelby Countians deserve that show. Our heritage dates back almost to the American Revolution itself, and not to celebrate would be an insult to our county’s heritage and a shame for all those who enjoy seeing the lights and sounds.
We each owe a big thank you to the Giordanos and the Duttons for ensuring that we didn’t miss out.
And we hope there will be another even better event next year.
