Bekaert Corporation’s introduction recently of a new processing system that eliminates lead and replaces it with water was a clear example for all local industry and our community as a whole.
Making our county “greener” was on The Sentinel-News’ list of goals for 2009. We challenged our governmental and industrial leaders to take up this challenge and make improvements this year.
Bekaert’s breakthrough is the best recent example of addressing that goal successfully.
Yes, we have had other positive, private progress – a new company to provide curbside recycling in the county, to name one – but this is a large corporation that has found a way to remove damaging chemicals from our soil and water.
Progress doesn’t get more positive than that.
Many manufacturers and other businesses in Shelby County who deal with chemicals have the chance to improve their stewardship to our environment.
We challenge their leaders to examine every opportunity to follow this lead.
Improving our environment is a shared responsibility.
