The 2013 Relay for Life took to the track at Shelby County High School track from noon Saturday to early Sunday morning, with 35 teams bringing in more than $64,000 for the American Cancer Society. Team Fit for Life topped JADE with more than $10,000, the first Shelby County team to reach that amount. Money will be collected until Aug. 31 and checks can be mailed to The American Cancer Society, 701 West Muhammad Ali Blvd., Louisville, Ky. 40203. Designate money go to Shelby County Relay for Life. The parade of teams in costume was the official kickoff for the event. The survivor walk was later that evening. Medallions were placed around the neck of each cancer survivor, who was joined by caregivers for the second lap. Members of the fund-raising teams then continued their walks to raise money and awareness. Music was performed by Megan Stout, Mike Sowards, Gene Francis, Mecha Giant and Isaiah Wills and Brendan Chase. Charlie Hawley with Puttin’ On the Hitz! was the DJ and emcee.
