Ida and Thomas Durr were still listed in critical and serious condition, respectively, at the University of Louisville Hospital on Friday, where they were transported after being involved in an accident on I-64 East Thursday afternoon.
Thomas Durr was in the hospital's surgical intensive care unit, and Ida Durr was in the coronary care unit.
The Durrs were injured when the pickup truck that Thomas Durr was driving left the roadway at a high rate of speed, according to Shelby County Sheriff's detective Jason Rice.
The one-vehicle accident, which happened at the 37-mile marker at about 4:30 p.m., left the pickup truck severely damaged and turned the wrong way on the shoulder of the road.
Both occupants had to be cut out of the truck by Shelby County fire fighters using the “Jaws of Life.”
“They are both in critical condition; his injuries are life-threatening,” Rice said,
Officers have not determined the cause of the accident.
The interstate was shut down in the East-bound lane was shut down completely while the wrecked vehicle was moved from the roadway, but though the removal happened quickly, the traffic remained snarled into the evening.
