Tommy Acklin, a teacher at the Education Center at Cropper, was discussing unjust laws with Deon Doleman when a classmate added to the conversation, “I heard about somewhere that was taking away people’s religious rights.” Acklin used the example of Deon not being able to vote simply because he had on a gray hooded sweatshirt. Segregation topics then entered the conversation and how African-Americans couldn’t attend school or use the swimming pool with whites.
