Cornerstone falls in 2 overtimes

The Collins boys’ basketball team erupted for 50 first-half points on their way to a resounding victory over Walton-Verona on Tuesday night.

The Titans’ huge first half paved the way for their season-high point total in their 84-47 blitzing of the Bearcats in Walton.

“Our team was energized, even after the long bus ride,” Collins Coach Chris Gaither said. “We played aggressively, and our defense was really good.

“Our best offense was our defense.”

Senior shooting guard Buddy Johnson led the Titans’ with 28 points, 21 of them on seven 3-point baskets.

Junior forwards Ralphie Stone and Zac Wiley added 11 and 10 points, respectively, in reserve.

Collins led, 50-26, at intermission.

“Our defense did good things, and we were able to get out in transition,” Gaither said of his team’s seventh consecutive victory.

The Titans host DeSales (16-12) at 7:30 tonight, their “Senior Night,” before hosting Spencer County (14-15) at 7:45 p.m. Wednesday in the 30th District Tournament semifinals.


Community Christian 50, Cornerstone Christian 49 (2OT)

The Crusaders outscored the Bulldogs, 10-9, in the second extra session at Independence in Cornerstone’s final game of the regular season.

Community led, 19-12, at the end of the first quarter before the Bulldogs pulled to within four (22-18) at halftime and one (31-30) by the end of the third period. Cornerstone then outpointed Community 4-3 in the fourth to force overtime. Both squads scored six points in the first extra session to set up the second OT.

Senior guard Josh Woodward had a team-high 21 points, and Christian Lopesilvero added 11, for the Bulldogs.

Cornerstone (20-5) is now off until it plays in the 3rd Region Tournament next weekend at the Academy of Individual Excellence in Louisville. The Bulldogs, the No. 1-seeded team, will play the winner between Community (19-6) and AIE at 1 p.m. Feb. 23.
