Titans, Rockets finish 1-2 in meet

-A A +A

Girls teams are 2nd, 3rd

By Josh Cook

A slew of solid performances helped float the Collins boys’ swim team to victory Wednesday night.

The Titans won seven of 11 events to triumph in a Collins and Shelby County invitational meet at Clear Creek Park’s Family Activity Center.

Shelby, meanwhile, finished second.

On the girls’ side, Collins placed second and the Rockets third.

“There were a total of forty-six personal-best times,” J.P. LaVertu, the coach of both teams, said. “The kids performed very well.”

Boys

The Titans tallied 316 points to win the 6-team meet. Shelby County was 70 points behind in second.

Collins captured all three relay events. The quartet of sophomore Paulo Ribenboim, freshman Paul Cozzens, juniors Mitch Tunstall and Coy Romine teamed up to win the 200-yard medley (1 minute, 52.90 seconds) and 400 freestyle (3:50.61) relays. Another foursome, junior Phillip Burkhardt, sophomores Cameron Rannells and Caleb McIntosh and freshman Chase Poff, captured the 200 freestyle relay (1:51.83).

Individually, Cozzens and Tunstall each won two events. Cozzens captured the 200 freestyle (1:57.88) and 100 butterfly (1:01.24) and Tunstall took the 50 freestyle (24.02) and 100 freestyle (53.78) events.

Collins also had three second-place finishes. Ribenboim was runner-up in the 50- and 100-freestyle events, as was Romine in the 100 backstroke.

Shelby County eighth-grader Jacob Luallen, who was second in the 100 butterfly and third in the 200 freestyle, led the Rockets.

Also for Shelby County, its 200 freestyle relay team of junior James Wells, senior Jared Bentley, sixth-grader Logan Kessinger and junior Dakota Kaler finished second.

Girls

Western Hills won the eight-team meet with 308 points. Collins was second with 288 and Shelby County, led by 2-event winner Collin Kessinger, third with 187. Spencer County swimmer Connor Foster, who trains with the Titans and Rockets, tallied 22 points to help the Bears to a seventh-place finish.

Collins didn’t win an event, but the Titans tallied runner-up finishes in eight of the 11 races.

Collins was second in all three relay races. The quartet of freshman Ali Fort, senior Erin Daugherty, junior Abby Borders and senior Chloe Crumpton was runner-up in the 200 medley relay, as were Borders, Daugherty, Fort and freshman Anna Bennett in the 400 freestyle relay and Crumpton, Bennett, freshman Lilly Sanchez and sixth-grader Tyler Dean in the 200 freestyle relay.

Fort was also second in the 200 freestyle and the 100 backstroke, Daugherty was second in the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke and Bennett was second in the 50 freestyle.

Meanwhile Kessinger, a Shelby senior, captured the 100 freestyle (57.30) and 100 backstroke (1:02.90).

Also for the Rockets, senior Jordan Webb was second in the 100 butterfly.

Collins and Shelby County don’t have another meet until the Best of the West Invitational in Bowling Green on Jan. 12.

“With the time off, we only have one scheduled practice over the break, I hope we don't lose much,” LaVertu said. “It is always hard when your season falls during a break, and our season typically has three. Fall break, Thanksgiving and then Christmas. We get going and then have some time off. I hope some of the kids take it upon themselves to get some water time on their own.”
