SCHS’s swimmer named outstanding female swimmer

By Josh Cook

Saturday was a good day for the Collins swim teams and Shelby County senior Collin Kessinger.

In the 11th annual Woodford County Invitational at Versailles, the Titans took third in the boys’ meet and sixth in the girls’ meet. Meanwhile Kessinger captured two events (the 200-yard individual medley and the 100 breaststroke) on her way to being named the outstanding female swimmer of the meet and helping the Rockets to a seventh-place finish in the girls’ competition (the Shelby boys took 10th).

“What an outstanding meet,” Collins & Shelby County Coach J.P. LaVertu said. “We had such great times.”

The squads combined for 58 personal-bests.

“The kids are really working hard and it is paying off,” LaVertu said.

Boys

Host Woodford County won the 19-team boys’ meet with 334.5 points. North Oldham was second with 287 and the Titans third with 218. The Rockets tallied 92 points.

Collins didn’t win any events but had two runner-up finishes, three thirds, three fourths and one fifth.

Collins’s second-place finishes came from sophomore Paulo Ribenboim in the 200 freestyle and junior Mitch Tunstall in the 100 breaststroke.

Tunstall, freshmen Chase Poff and Paul Cozzens and junior Coy Romine, helped the Titans’ 200 medley relay team to a third-place finish. Later  Cozzens, Ribenboim, Tunstall and Romine were third in the 400 freestyle relay.

Individually, Cozzens was also third in the 100 breaststroke and fourth in the 200 IM and Tunstall was fourth in the 100 butterfly.

Meanwhile Collins’ 200 freestyle relay team of Poff, sophomore Caleb McIntosh, junior Phillip Burkhardt and Ribenboim finished fourth. Romine was fifth in the 100 breaststroke.

Shelby County was led by Jacob Luallen. The eighth-grader finished fifth in the 100 freestyle and sixth in the 100 backstroke.

Girls

Woodford County compiled 340 points, nearly doubling the Titans (170.5), in the 20-team girls’ meet. The Rockets totaled 109 points on the strength of Kessinger’s victories.

She captured the 200 IM in 2 minutes, 11.53 seconds. Later she captured the 100 breaststroke in 1:08.71.

Freshman Ali Fort led the Collins contingent. She finished second in the 100 backstroke and fourth in the 100 freestyle and was a member of the Titans’ fifth-place 200 medley (senior Erin Daugherty, junior Abby Borders, senior Chloe Crumpton) and 200 freestyle (Daugherty, Borders and freshman Lilly Sanchez) relay teams.

Individually, Borders finished seventh in the 100 freestyle and tied for seventh in the 50 freestyle. Daugherty, meanwhile, was seventh in the 100 breaststroke.
