TAYLORSVILLE – The Collins girls’ soccer team continued its hot start to the season Tuesday night.
The Titans topped host Spencer County, 3-2, in a 30th District match in Taylorsville.
It was Collins’ first victory over the Bears in the program’s brief history. Spencer County beat the Titans twice in 2010 and two more times last season, including 6-0 in the district tournament.
“They beat us in districts last year, so this is pretty awesome,” senior midfielder Shelby Vogel said.
Vogel scored one goal, and junior forward Lindsey Ketcham tallied the other two – including the tiebreaker with a little less than 15 minutes remaining in the match.
The Titans (7-1, 1-1) won nine and 10 matches, respectively, in its first two years of the program, but they appear well on their way to surpassing those totals. Collins has outscored its opponents, 39-5, this season, including 32-3 in its five matches since losing, 2-0, at Anderson County on Aug. 20.
“At the start we didn’t always play as a team,” Ketcham said. “Now we’re starting to work together, and it’s working.”
Ketcham gave the Titans the early lead when she beat a defender and the goalkeeper in the first half. It stayed 1-0 until halftime.
In the second half the Titans increased their lead to 2-0 when Vogel connected on a shot from about 25 yards out.
But the Bears, who beat Collins, 5-2 and 5-3, in 2010 and last season, 4-0 and 6-0, rallied back to tie the score at 2.
The Titans, however, had one goal left in them.
“Brittany [Whitehead] passed it through, and I beat the defender and crossed the goalie and scored,” Ketcham said.
“The girls kept their heads up and did well, that’s very commendable,” Collins Coach Terry Murphy said. “They’re playing well together and using each other more.”
The Titans next host Carroll County on Monday night, then 21st-ranked South Oldham on Wednesday.
