Rout by No. 1 St. X worst of bad weekend

By Josh Cook

It was a rough weekend for Collins’ baseball team.

The Titans, who had won their first 20 games of the season, endured a trio of losses – including two to ranked teams – in the Louisville Invitational Tournament.

Tates Creek topped the Titans, 5-1, Friday night at Derby City Field before St. Xavier clobbered them, 12-2, in five innings, and DuPont Manual edged them, 8-6, on Saturday at St. X.

The Commodores (13-5), who are sixth in the Kentucky High School Baseball Coaches Association Top 25 and eighth in the Kentucky Prep Baseball Report Top 25, rode a 4-run second inning to a 4-run victory over the Titans, No. 7 in the KHSBCA poll and No. 12 in the latest PBR poll.

Collins starter Austin Perry, a UK signee, was tagged with just his second loss after giving up five earned runs on six hits while walking one in two innings as he battled arm and elbow problems. Senior Buddy Johnson was solid in relief, throwing four hitless innings and striking out seven.

Tates Creek junior pitcher Tanner Hart, normally a reliever, gave up one earned run on two hits while walking two and striking out five in the complete-game victory.

Senior center fielder JaVon Shelby, son of former major-leaguer John Shelby and Perry’s future teammate at UK, sparked the Commodores’ second with a 2-run double.

St. Xavier 12, Collins 2

The host Tigers (21-2), No. 1 in the PBR’s Top 25 and No. 2 in the KHSBCA poll, only led 4-2 after three innings before scoring two runs in the fourth and six in the fifth to end the game early. Johnson and Nate Clifton had two hits apiece. Clifton also scored a pair of runs.

Manual 8, Collins 6

The Crimsons (13-8) broke a tie by scoring five runs in the top of the sixth inning then held off Collins’ comeback in the seventh, when the Titans scored three.

Johnson had a single, triple and home run in three at-bats and four RBIs. Clifton and David Decker each went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Clifton, who came on in relief of Dan Sanders, gave up five runs (three earned) on four hits while walking two to take the loss.

The Titans (22-4), who played at Simon Kenton on Tuesday, host Oldham County at 6 p.m. Thursday.
