White's 38 leads Collins over crosstown rival

By Josh Cook

Chandler White’s round got off to a rough start on Thursday.

However White, a senior golfer for Collins High School, rebounded and led the Titans to a victory over their crosstown rivals.

White made bogeys on the first two holes but quickly bounced back on his way to 2-over-par 38 – which earned him medalist honors – as Collins topped Shelby County, 159-179, in a dual match at Shelbyville Country Club.

“I just dug down, got over one and two and started playing really good,” said White, who played as No. 3 for the Titans. “I just wanted to come in with a solid score. I knew our one [Brandon Sanner] and two [Michael Atkins] had been playing well.”

Thursday, though, White played better than his classmates and teammates (Sanner shot 41, Atkins 39) in what he described as a “solid, smooth round.”

After a couple of early bumps in the road, White settled into a groove. He made pars at Nos. 3 and 4 and birdie at the par-4 fifth. He then finished up with four consecutive pars, although, he said, “I almost chipped in on number nine for birdie.

“Everything kind of fell into place.”

It continued a solid start to the season for White, whose score wasn’t always counted last year.

“I was the five-man; I didn’t really break forty [for nine holes],” he said.

White began his season with 79 in the first round of the Flyer Classic, then followed that up with 81 the next day.

“I’ve just been playing really well,” he said.

White attributes that to a summer full of practice rounds.

“I played a lot with Brandon [Sanner],” he said. “We’ve been friends since we were born. We practice every day together.”

And it has seemed to pay off early on this season.

“This year I’ve gained a little bit more yardage and a lot more accuracy,” White said.

That’s something that new Collins Coach Daniel Iceman echoed.

“His short game is impressive,” Iceman said of White. “He saves a lot of shots, getting up and down and making putts.”

Sophomore Jake Coleman matched Sanner’s 41 to round out the Titans’ team score.

Junior Dakota Baatz led Shelby County with 41. Senior Isaac Martin added 42 and junior Tanner Brandenburg 46.
