Tip leads to arrest of alleged forger
A Crime Stoppers tip helped Shelbyville police locate Jeanette Mitchell Wednesday who was wanted in a traveler's check forgery case. Mitchell was arrested Dec. 19 and charged with criminal possession of a forged instrument.
Crime Stoppers had reported in November, a woman believed to be Mitchell had cashed two counterfeit American Express Travelers checks at the Convenient Food Mart on Main Street.
Mitchell was described as a white female about 39 years of age and approximately 5 feet 4 inches tall, weighing 200 pounds.
Police said the counterfeit checks are very high quality and can be difficult to detect. If anyone suspects they might have received a counterfeit travelers check, they can contact the issuer of the check for verification. For American Express, call 1-800-525-7641. To check U.S. Postal money orders, call 1-866-459-7822. For verification, you will need the check number and the amount of the check.
Anyone with information about local crime is asked to call Shelbyville/Shelby County Crime Stoppers at (502) 633-4500. Crime Stoppers offers cash rewards of up to $1,000 for information leading to an arrest. The identities of those providing information to Crime Stoppers is kept anonymous and any cash reward is distributed through the use of a code number.
