Stone-led rally not enough

By Josh Cook

The defending state champions handed the Collins boys’ basketball team its first defeat of the season.

Host Madison Central built a 7-point halftime lead Tuesday night, then outscored the Titans by eight in the third quarter on its way to a 59-46 victory in Richmond.

The Titans (5-1) tried to rally in the final period, outscoring the Indians, 17-15, but it was too little too late.

Madison Central (5-1), which beat Collins, 70-59, last season, led 25-18 at halftime before outscoring the Titans, 19-11, in the third quarter to take command.

Collins’ senior sixth man, Ralphie Stone, scored a game-high 22 points, including 17 in the second half. He hit eight field goals and was 6-of-7 from the free-throw line. Junior point guard Brent Kidwell added 12 points, half of which came on a pair of fourth-quarter 3-pointers.

Senior guard Coty Alexander scored 16 points to lead the Indians, who outscored Collins by nine points from behind the 3-point line and by eight points from the free-throw line.

The Titans play East Ridge (2-3), out of the 15th Region, at 9:30 tonight at Rowan County’s Kentucky Bank Challenge. They will then face Pulaski County (4-0) at 1:45 p.m. and George Rogers Clark (4-2) at 7 p.m. Saturday in that event.
