SOFTBALL: SCHS loses twice

The Shelby County softball team dropped a pair of games in Rockcastle County’s Where’s the Beach? Classic Saturday in Mount Vernon.

South Laurel outlasted the Rockets 7-3 in their first game before Madison Southern routed them 12-2 in their second game.

In the loss to the Cardinals (10-1), Shelby County trailed 1-0 after two innings before scoring three runs - highlighted by Kara Wiley’s two-run single – in the top of the third inning. However, South Laurel, which is ranked No. 20 in the Kentucky Softball Coaches Association Top 25, responded with three runs in the bottom of the third to take the lead and then plated three more in the fifth.

In the loss to the Eagles (7-0), Shelby County had five more errors than hits – 8 to 3.

The Rockets (2-6), who played at Western Hills Tuesday, host Trimble County at 6 p.m. today at the Shelby County Athletic Complex.


GIRLS’ TENNIS: SCHS blanks North Bullitt

The Shelby County girls’ tennis team improved to 6-1 on the season with 5-0 victory over North Bullitt on March 27 at Clear Creek Park.

The Rockets’ Nos. 1 and 2 singles players, Hailey Coffey and Emalee Turley, were victorious by scores of 6-3, 6-2. Meanwhile seventh-grader Yohari Salama won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3 singles, and both Shelby County doubles teams – Rachel Dove and Kendall Souder at No. 1 and Jordan Rood and Melanie Roley at No. 2 – also triumphed by that same score.

The Rockets, who played at Gallatin County Tuesday, play at Carroll County on Thursday.
