Despite a slow start the SCHS girls’ soccer team hammered host Henry County, 9-0, Thursday.
The Lady Rockets (5-1) got two goals from Alex Patterson, two assists from Callie Greiner and a goal from Maggie Goetzinger in the first half, but Coach Joe Turner wasn’t pleased with the team’s play early on.
“The first half was a slow process,” he said. “We played very flat from the beginning.”
The second half, however, was a different story. The girls stormed out of the gate and ended Henry County’s (0-4) chances early on.
“We played the first fifteen minutes about as good as we could play,” Turner said.
Elizabeth Plante scored off Greiner’s third assist, Hannah Starner added a goal, and Plante scored again this time on an unassisted goal.
Greiner struck again, this time finding Stacie Lanham for a goal that put Shelby up, 7-0. Charity Wilms and Goetzinger wrapped up the scoring.
Turner said the team has worked on finishing the past few weeks and it showed Thursday.
“I was very pleased with our play in the second half. Our spacing was much better and we were finishing our shots,” he said. “Our defense was again very strong, only allowing Henry County a couple of long range shots.
