Shelbyville extends win streak with shutout

-A A +A

Good pitching, Jeffries' hitting leads the way

By Josh Cook

The Shelbyville American Legion Post 37 baseball team made it three victories in a row Wednesday night, blanking host Danville, 7-0.

Pitchers Jake Eberling and Lance Shelton combined to hold the Mustangs to two hits, and Mason Jeffries went 4-for-4 with four RBIs to power Shelbyville, which was coming off a third-place finish in its own invitational tournament.

Eberling, a 2012 graduate of Jeffersontown High School who recently completed his freshman season at Indiana University Southeast, earned the victory. He gave up one hit – a third-inning double – walked one and struck out six in the first five innings. Shelton, a recent graduate of Spencer County, gave up only one hit – an eighth-inning single – while walking two and striking out two in the final four frames.

Jeffries, a senior-to-be at Collins, gave Post 37 (3-3) the only run it would need when he led off the top of the second inning with a solo home run. Two innings later, Jeffries increased Shelbyville’s lead to 2-0 when he singled home Zac Wiley, who had led off the fourth with a double. Jeffries also had an RBI single in the sixth, when Post 37 tacked on two more runs, and an RBI double in the eighth before Drew Greenwood singled him home to make it 6-0. Shelbyville added another run in the ninth.

In addition to Jeffries' gigantic game, Nate Clifton added a pair of hits, and Greenwood contributed a pair of RBIs

Shelbyville is scheduled to play three games at Ashland Post 76 this weekend, at noon and 2 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday.
