Shelbyville Mayor Tom Hardesty announced Thursday the names of the four Shelbyville appointees to the Human Rights Commission board.
Terms for the newly rejuvenated commission start Jan. 1, 2009. After randomly drawing to set the staggered terms, the terms were:
1 yr. term - Gary Walls (Term expires Jan. 1, 2010)
2 yr. term - Elaine Farris (Term expires Jan. 1, 2011)
3 yr. term - Randy Brown (Term expires Jan. 1, 2012)
4 yr. term - Ann Morris (Term expires Jan. 1, 2013)
Pay up or no license
Also at the city council meeting, the council approved the second reading on an ordinance prohibiting businesses that are delinquent in the payment of any taxes or fees to the city from having their license to sell alcoholic beverages issued or renewed. Once those payments have been made, the license will be made available to the business.
The council approved the ordinance with the hope that it will encourage businesses to pay their business license fees, ad valorem real property tax, and any penalties and interest assessed for failure of making payment.
"It's not fair to the people that are paying them on time and regularly to have to carry these other people that aren't," Hardesty said.
Special meeting upcoming
The next special called city council meeting will be on November 6 at 6 p.m.
