Shelby County School Board: Last day for school: May 22

Students at Shelby County Public Schools should plan to attend school for an extra couple of  days in May after missing classes for two snow days this winter.

If there are no more school cancellations, SCPS will add two days to the school year, pushing the end of the school year back to May 22.

“Hopefully we’re past all of it [weather issues] now,” said David Weedman, director of pupil personnel for the school district. “Once we feel we’re past the threat of winter weather postponing school, then we’ll revise the calendar and submit it to Frankfort [the Department of Education] and to the [school] board.”

Weedman said the administration generally waits to submit the revised calendar, so there is no need for votes on several revisions.

Board goals

Although the school calendar will not be on this week’s agenda, the Shelby County Board of Education will have its regularly scheduled meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Area Technology Center, 230 Rocket Lane.

Chief Academic Officer/Deputy Superintendent Lisa Smith will present for consideration the board goals, which center on the district’s “5 Main Things:”

• Curriculum Alignment.
• Instructional Norms.
• Professional Learning.
• Intervention.
• Enrichment.

The board will hear updates on how the district is meeting its goals for this year and begin to plan on how the goals will advance for the 2013-14 school year.

Also at the meeting, the board will:

• Hear a presentation from Susan Wiley, principal of Shelby County Area Technology Center.
• Consider awarding lawn-care contracts for the 2013 mowing season.
• Consider approval of new and revised job descriptions.
• Consider approval of 2013-14 non-resident contracts for outgoing students – Scott County.
• Consider waiving board policy to allow Schuman’s national underclassman Football Combine to hold an event at Collins High School on April 7.
• Consider waiving board policy to allow SCHS ROTC to travel on March 24.
• Consider waiving board policy to allow the East Middle academic team to compete at the state academic competition on Sunday.
• Consider allowing Collins’ choir and the East Middle School’s sixth-grade to use a common carrier.
• Consider a resolution to authorize the Kentucky Interlocal School Transportation Association to obtain bids and sell used buses.
• Consider renewal of yearbook and portrait contracts for 2013-14.
• Consider leaves of absence requests.
