However its eliminated in rout

The Shelby County 14-year-old Babe Ruth all-star baseball team had two big game-winning rallies, however, the squad also lost a pair of games, including one nail-biter, to be knocked out of the double-elimination 2013 East Kentucky State Tournament.

Shelby won its opening game at Veterans Park in Lexington, rallying for an 8-6 triumph over Russell County on Thursday before being edged, 5-4 by South Lexington on Friday. It bounced back to beat Paris, 9-6, Saturday morning before being eliminated, 18-0 by Russell County on Saturday night.

“[We] played well for the tournament overall,” head coach Mitchell Tinsley said.

Shelby trailed, 5-2, after two innings before rallying for three runs in the third and fifth innings to triumph.

In the decisive fifth frame, Mitchell Stivers walked with one out then advanced to second on Stu Jo Meredith’s single. After both advanced on a wild pitch Stivers scored on a fielder’s choice. Austin Yaroma and Ben Wisely then followed with back-to-back RBI singles.

Shelby County, which was led by the bottom of its batting order, finished with 14 hits.

Meredith, the team’s No. 8 hitter, and Tanner Brown, the team’s No. 9 hitter, each went 3-for-4. Meredith scored twice while Brown tallied two RBIs. Yaroma and Wisely each added a pair of hits while Stivers contributed two RBIs and two runs scored.

Austin Jennings picked up the victory after relieving Wisely, the starter, in the fifth. Jennings gave up one earned run on two hits, while walking two and striking out four over the final three innings.

South Lexington 5, Shelby County 4

South Lexington rallied for four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat Shelby. Wisely led Shelby County at the plate with a pair of hits.

Brown started but got a no-decision. He gave up four runs (three earned) on five hits, walked one and struck out four.

“Tanner Brown pitched a great game, holding South Lexington to one run through six innings,” Tinsley said. “Unfortunately Tanner ran out of gas and we struggled to close the game out.”

Shelby County 9, Paris 6

Shelby County trailed, 6-1, after 3 1/2 innings, before rallying for two runs in the bottom of the fourth and three each in the fifth and sixth. The teams were tied at 6 heading to the bottom of the sixth before Shelby scored thrice for the victory.

In that inning, Jacob Sheeley and Yaroma had back-to-back, one-out doubles. Sheeley stopped at third, but he and Yaroma scored moments later when Wisely reached on a fielding error by Paris’ right-fielder. Meredith added an RBI single moments later.

Will Hisle led the way for Shelby at the plate, going 2-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI. Sheeley also went 2-for-2, and Meredith was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Jennings got the victory in relief once again. He gave up three hits over the final four innings, while striking out six, after relieving Lucas Tackett.

Russell routed Shelby, scoring 11 runs in the top of the first inning. Shelby County managed only three hits in elimination.

“Saturday we had our first game at 10 a.m. but had to wait around in Lexington almost eight hours before we could play again and the kids were extremely tired,” Tinsley said.

In the tournament Sheeley led Shelby County at the plate, going 4-for-7 (.571) while Wisely went 6-for-12 (.500). Meanwhile Meredith hit .455 (5-for-11), Yaroma .385, Stivers .364 and Brown and Hisle .333 each. On the mound Jennings was 2-0 with a 1.00 earned-run average and 10 strikeouts in seven innings.

“Overall, the team played very well, but two innings cost us a chance at playing for a state title,” Tinsley said. “I was so proud of the kids’ overall play for the tournament because we only had four practices to get them ready for the state tournament.”
