Scouting Report: SCHS AT SENECA

-A A +A
By Todd Martin

Game time: 7:30 p.m. Friday, at Seneca High School

Radio: WXLN-FM (9.33)

Records:  Seneca 2-1

        Shelby County 1-1

Last week:Seneca 56-35 loss at Fern Creek; Shelby County 42-18 win at home against North Hardin.

Coaches: Seneca, Louis Dover (19-41, 6th year at school); SCHS, Todd Shipley (45-57, 10th year at school)

When Seneca has the ball:

For the second week in a row the Rockets will see an offense similar to their Spread. The Redhawks will look for QB J. Bender (#2) to air it out to J. Jacobs (#3) and A. Nance (#12). But the Rockets can’t sit back because Bender will tuck the ball and run.  “We have to keep him in the pocket and mix up blitzs and looks so he doesn’t get comfortable,” Shipley said. The Rockets will also have to look for RB N. Greene (#4), another quick threat for the Redhawks.

When SCHS has the ball:

The Rockets were able to run and pass nearly at will against North Hardin last week but expect a much quicker team this week. “They line up a lot like we do on defense, so it becomes a matter of execution,” Shipley said. Look for the Rockets to try and spread the ball around like last week when five different receivers caught passes. Seneca’s speed could cause problems for the Rockets’ air attack, look for Shelby to try to pound Seneca with the running game.

Notes:SCHS had nearly perfect balance last week against North Hardin with 37 rushes and 40 passes....T. Elzy caught 9 passes, look for the WR to be a big target this week as well....Seneca gave up 561 yards of offense last week, 501 of those on the ground....Bender was just 12 of 29 in the game as the Redhawks trailed most of the game and were forced to throw.... Bender was originally a WR for standout QB D. Smith who tore his ACL in a pick-up basketball game just before the season....The Redhawks also lost top running back D. Mitchell in the season opener to a broken ankle.
