Girls hammer Gallatin County in first round

By Todd Martin

Shelby County hoped to get some revenge when it faced Oldham County in the semifinals of the 8th Region Volleyball Tournament on Wednesday at Bullitt East, but the Colonels had a different idea.

The Rockets hung close in the first game before, falling, 25-18, but Oldham County steamrolled Shelby, 25-6, in the second to win the match 2-0.

"Oldham was our season opener this year, and they were able to eek out a victory [25-18, 25-21], so we were looking forward to a possible revenge match," SCHS Coach Felicia Pace said.

The girls stayed within about four points of Oldham throughout much of the first game, but Oldham pulled away at the end.

"Oldham has two big hitters, so we designed our play to make it more difficult for them [Oldham] to get the quick set to those hitters," Pace said. "Christy Hatter opened up with a few key serves that threw them off to begin with, but our defense was a bit shaky."

Pace said the team tried to implement a few more changes for the second game, but those adjustments didn't have the desired effect.

"We knew we had to make some adjustments in order to stay in the match, but they never manifested," she said. "The girls had difficulty keeping their composure and didn't make it back into their type of play."

Pace said this loss stung a little more because the Rockets had played Oldham so close during the regular season.

"The loss was a huge upset to use because we knew that we were capable of beating Oldham," she said. "In this case we have to take the bad with the good."

Pace was optimistic because the Rockets trip to the semifinals was the farthest they have advanced since making the regional final in 2003.

"It's been a few years since Rocket volleyball has won the district and advanced past the first round of the region," she said. 'It's a great place to end the season with a young team."

Shelby County 2, Gallatin County 0

The Rockets hammered Gallatin County, 2-0 (25-15, 25-14), in the first round of the 8th Region Tournament at Bullitt East Tuesday.

They dominated Gallatin on both sides but mainly behind a strong serving effort.

"Our serve is an offensive weapon, and it paid off," Pace said. "We have some really good servers in Heather Luce, Caty Hawkins and Christy Hatter. We try to give them spots to hit, and tonight they hit every spot we pointed out."

At one point early in the first game, the Rockets had six of their 10 points from aces, including two from Hatter and two from Keyshia Patterson. In all, Shelby County finished the match with 11 aces.

Shelby County's Christy Hatter and Leanna Armstrong were named to the All-Region Tournament team.
