Shelby County High School students earned $41,400 through 48 local scholarships for education and a little more than $1 million in total scholarships, as reported to the school’s guidance counselors.

About 100 of the graduating seniors filled the school’s auditorium along with their friends and family on Thursday night to celebrate the achievements at the annual Senior Awards Night.

SCHS Principal Eddie Oakley noted how he and this group started at Shelby County together four years ago.

“I envy them,” he said, injecting a bit of humor into the evening. “They get to go. I have to stay here, but they get to go out and see what’s out there.”

Leading the way for the senior class was Logan Johnson and Cathryn Craycraft, who each picked up four scholarships. Craycraft also was recognized for having 12 years of perfect attendance before catching the flu and missing a few days in her senior year.

Holly Zukowski was honored for having eight years of perfect attendance.

Abby Siegel and sisters Taylor and Jordan Webb each received three scholarships, and Jordan Webb was also named the best All-Around Senior Female by the Kiwanis Club.

Justin Stewart, who earned two scholarships, was recognized by the Rotary Club as the Best All-Around Senior Male.

The  Athletes of the Year were Zach Shipley and Collin Kessinger.

Along with the local scholarships, this year’s senior class had 10 students enlist in the Marine Corps, the largest group the school has ever had. Shelby County High School has a Marine Corps JROTC program. Those students will be eligible for about $80,000 in educational benefits.

Those students enlisting are: Miguel Batz, Jared Bentley, Austin Blocker, Richard Braumbaugh, Gage Hannold, Patrick Hargadon, William Hundley, Kelvin Romero, Rachel Warford and Kendrick Warren.
