FRANKFORT – Doug Martin and Jeron Russell earned their first State Tournament berth, while Paige Kregor was one victory away from her third in a row.
Martin and Russell, a junior and a freshman, respectively, at Shelby County, won a three-set quarterfinal thriller in the 8th Region boys’ doubles tournament Tuesday at Franklin County to earn a spot in next week’s state tourney at the University of Kentucky. The Rockets’ tandem, seeded No. 3, trounced their first two foes, giving up only one game.
Meanwhile Kregor, a junior at Collins and the two-time defending girls’ singles region runner-up, continued to play into Tuesday evening after rain forced Monday’s first-round matches to start late and end early.
Kregor, seeded fourth, breezed through her first two matches at Western Hills.
The tournament will wrap up today.
Martin and Russell, who advanced to the region quarterfinals last year, triumphed, 6-1, 6-0, in their first-round match, then rolled, 6-0, 6-0, in their second. Then they outlasted Trimble County’s Reese True and Dylan Stethen, who were seeded fifth, 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-8) in the quarterfinals late Tuesday.
Shelby County junior Ethan Russell, Jeron’s older brother and the No. 6 seed in singles, won his first two matches before falling in the third round Tuesday.
In his first-round match he blanked Collins freshman Tucker Judy, 6-0, 6-0, before outlasting Frankfort’s James Murphy, 6-7 (4-7), 6-1, 1-0 (11-9), in a third-set super tiebreaker. However South Oldham senior Steven Mayborg, seeded No. 3, ended Russell’s run, 6-0, 6-0, in the quarterfinals (where Russell also was eliminated last year).
Shelby County sophomore Jimmy Welman won his first-round match, beating North Bullitt’s Isaac Heines, 6-1, 7-5, before falling to Anderson County’s Ty Glover, No. 5, in the second round, 6-4, 6-2.
Meanwhile the Rockets’ other doubles team (senior Stuart Orange and sophomore Luke Dove) dropped a close, first-round match against Western Hills’ tandem of Trey Badgett and Kodey Hickman, who edged Orange and Dove, 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (11-9), in a super tiebreaker.
Both of Collins’ doubles teams won their first-round matches.
Senior Wil Johnson and junior Luke Noel fell behind, 5-1, in the first set before winning 12 consecutive games in their 7-5, 6-0 triumph over Bullitt East’s Dylan Hooper and Zach Marlette. However the fifth-seeded team from Trimble, True and Stethen, topped the Titans’ tandem, 6-1, 6-4, in the second round.
Collins junior Derek Stivers and sophomore Cy Dutton also won their first-round match, 6-0, 6-1, before falling to second-seeded Bullitt East (Reese Milburn and Hunter Norris), 6-0, 6-1.
South Oldham freshman Jordan Pitts, seeded No. 1 in singles, topped Collins seventh-grader Jared Baltzell, 6-0, 6-0, in the first round.
Kregor won her first two matches, 6-0, 6-0 and 6-2, 6-0, in advancing into the third round. No other singles player or doubles duo from the county made it that far in the girls’ brackets.
Kregor’s teammate, sophomore Ashley Quinn, won her first singles match, 6-0, 6-2, but Franklin County freshman Kelley Barker, seeded fifth, defeated her, 6-0, 6-0 in the second round.
Collins’ tandem of freshman Abigail Griggs and seventh-grader Tatum Watson won its first-round match, 6-3, 1-6, 1-0 (12-10), in a super tiebreaker before falling to the top-seeded doubles team from North Oldham in the second round. The Titans’ other doubles team, freshman Brianna Suggs and eighth-grader Eliza Davis, lost its first-round match.
Shelby County, meanwhile, won one singles and one doubles match.
Junior Mana Shimizu won her first-round match, 6-2, 7-5, but lost her second-round match to South Oldham seventh-grader Steffi Pitts, the tourney No. 1 seeded player, 6-0, 6-0. South Oldham eighth-grader Natalie Dearen, the No. 6 seed, defeated Shelby County junior Hailey Coffey, 6-0, 6-1, in the first round.
In doubles, eighth-grader Rachel Dove and sophomore Jordan Rood triumphed, 6-1, 6-0, in their first-round match, but they succumbed to the No. 6-seeded team from South Oldham in the second round.
Freshman Abbey Gowin and junior Melanie Roley fell to the No. 4 team from Anderson County, Hannah and Amanda Wampler, 6-2, 6-0 in the first round.
