The visiting Michigan Bucks blasted the River City Rovers, the Premier Development League men’s soccer team that is playing its home matches in Shelbyville, 4-1, Saturday night at the Shelby County Athletic Complex.
The Great Lakes Division-leading Bucks (7-1) scored two goals in the first 17 minutes, then cruised to victory over the Rovers (4-5-1).
In the eighth minute Gerald Ben, the reigning PDL Player of the Week, chipped the ball to Dion Peters for the first goal of the match. Eight minutes later Ben tapped in a feed from Matt Walker to make it 2-0.
In the 25th minute the Rovers lost Sebastien Henke to a red card, leaving them a man down for the remainder of the match.
In the 73rd minute Michigan added to its lead, when Walker fed Drew Ruggles for the Bucks’ third goal. That advantage grew 15 minutes later when Nate Steinwascher scored off a feed from Ruggles.
The Rovers’ lone goal came in the 89th minute, when Luis Ramirez converted a corner kick.
The Bucks outshot River City, 14-13. Taylor Hafling had three saves in goal for the Rovers.
River City hosts the Toronto Lynx at 7 p.m. Saturday – their penultimate home match of the regular season – at the SCAC.
