They win district game at Spencer, nip Henry

By Josh Cook

The Shelby County softball team picked up a pair of victories, including a key district triumph.

The Rockets blanked host Spencer County, 8-0, Thursday in a 30th District game in Taylorsville before rallying to beat visiting Henry County, 5-4, Monday at the Shelby County Athletic Complex.

Freshman Sydney Wright tossed a two-hit shutout, and got plenty of run support, as the Rockets routed the Bears (1-10, 0-1).

Wright, who took a no-hitter into the fifth inning, struck out seven and walked one as Shelby County (7-13, 1-1) eclipsed its victory total of the 2011-12 season.

The Rockets pounded out 11 hits, led by Ari Jones, a senior center fielder, who went 3-for-3 with a triple, two RBIs and a run scored. Wright helped her cause with a pair of hits and a pair of runs scored, and fellow frosh Abby Wills also had two hits and two runs scored.

Shelby County tallied two runs in the third inning, single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth frames and three in the seventh inning.

In the third Wright got things started with a 2-out single. She then stole second before scoring on Wills’s single. Wills stole second before seventh-grader Brianna Waits drove her in with a single.

The Rockets’ seventh inning was highlighted by seventh-grader Hannah Webb’s RBI single and Jones’ 2-run triple.

The Rockets rallied from a 4-1 deficit to avenge an earlier loss to the Wildcats (9-6), scoring three runs in the bottom of the fifth to tie the score and another in the sixth that proved to be the winner.

The Rockets took the early lead on Jones’ RBI single in the bottom of the first, but Henry County, which beat Shelby, 9-2, on March 22, scored a run in the third and three in the top of the fifth.

The Rockets tied the score in the bottom of the fifth, thanks to RBIs from Wills and Waits.

Then in the sixth Webb led off with a single before advancing to third when freshman Savannah Smeaton reached on an error. Webb scored the winning run on senior Keaton Jesse’s sacrifice fly.

Shelby County (8-13), which played at Assumption on Tuesday night, hosts sixth-ranked Oldham County at 6 p.m. Thursday and Bullitt East at 6 p.m. Friday.
