Coach: We’re young, talented

By Josh Cook

After advancing to the 8th Region Tournament in 2012, the Shelby County baseball team fell one game short last season.
The Rockets, who finished 24-10-1 but lost to Spencer County, 4-2, in the 30th District Tournament semifinals last year, aim to return to the region tourney this spring.
“Expectations are still going to be really high,” said Shelby County Coach Bart “Rudy” Roettger, whose team lost seven seniors to graduation. “We’re young, but we’ve got talent.”
The Rockets will be led by senior infielder-pitcher-catcher Kipp Moore (.357 batting average, 47 runs scored and 34 stolen bases and 5-1 with a 1.80 earned-run average last season), senior pitcher Dillon Boone (8-1 with one save and a 1.67 ERA) and junior infielder-pitcher Kyler Dugle (.353 batting average). Moore signed with Murray State in the fall.
Three other key returning players are senior outfielder Zach Holmes (.343, 27 runs scored, 19 RBIs, 11 runs scored), junior infielder Steve Standafer and junior infielder-pitcher Joe Crisp.
Three others coming back are senior outfielder Alex Bradley, senior right-handed pitcher David Fitzgerald and junior catcher Dallas Wills.
Roettger said he also expects contributions from junior pitcher Cam Veeley, sophomore infielder Matt Gammon, sophomore pitcher Riley Everson and sophomore utility man Spencer Shouse.
“Come district time, I think we’ll be a tough out because we’ll have two pitchers that will be tough for teams to beat,” Roettger said.
Shelby County was supposed to host Bardstown in its season opener Thursday afternoon, but that game was cancelled. The Rockets will open their season Saturday at Paul Dunbar at noon.
