The Shelby County softball team equaled its victory total of last season with a 4-2 triumph over Trimble County on Monday in Bedford.
The Rockets scored single runs in the first and second innings before adding a 2-spot in the fifth.
Sydney Wright picked up the complete-game victory on the mound. Wright, a freshman, gave up one earned run on eight hits while striking out four.
Meanwhile, senior Ari Jones and freshman Abby Wills led Shelby County’s 7-hit attack with two apiece.
The Rockets (6-12), who hosted Bethlehem on Tuesday, play at Spencer County at 5:30 p.m. Thursday in a 30th District game before hosting Collins in another district game Friday.
SOFTBALL: Capital City Classic
Collins went 2-2 and Shelby County 0-3 in the Capital City Classic this past weekend at Franklin County.
FRANKLIN COUNTY 13, COLLINS 1:The Flyers (7-4), buoyed by a 9-run third inning, bombed the Titans on Friday night in their first game of the tourney. Junior Lindsey Ketcham led Collins at the plate, going 2-for-2.
COLLINS 9, SOUTH OLDHAM 8:The Titans rallied from a 5-1 deficit, scoring four runs in the bottom halves of the fourth and fifth innings (after the Dragons had scored three in the top of the fifth) on Saturday.
Senior Lauren Shepherd and freshman Janelle Hynes, the Titans’ Nos. 1 and 2 hitters, combined to go 5-for-6 at the plate. Seventh-grader Paige Oldham picked up the victory in relief of Shepherd.
COLLINS 12, LARUE COUNTY 2:The Titans pounded out 16 hits to clobber the Hawks (5-14) in five innings, with Shepherd going 3-for-4 with three runs scored and four RBIs. Ketcham, Hynes and eighth-grader Hannah Renfro added three hits apiece, and Sidney Cloyd went 2-for-2 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
Freshman Kylie Truelock picked up the victory on the mound. She yielded one earned run with one walk and three hits.
BUTLER 9, COLLINS 3:The Bearettes beat the Titans and their coach Suzanne Cates (a Butler alum). Senior Bailey Rankin scored two runs, and sophomore Danaria Lewis had a pair of RBIs.
BOURBON COUNTY 14, SCHS 2:The Colonels (11-4) erupted for nine runs in the fourth inning, and the Rockets committed nine errors.
Seventh-grader Hannah Webb led Shelby County, going 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI.
BUTLER 12, SCHS 2:The Bearettes (12-6) plated five runs in the first and fourth innings and two in the second. Shelby freshman Savannah Smeaton went 2-for-2.
FRANKLIN COUNTY 10, SCHS 0: The Flyers (7-4) pounded out 15 hits while holding the Rockets to two.
GIRLS’ TENNIS: Collins wins 2; SCHS wins 1
The Titans blanked North Bullitt, 5-0, Friday in Shepherdsville before beating host Frankfort, 3-2, Monday.
Against the Eagles, sophomore Ashley Quinn led the way, triumphing, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 1 singles. Seventh-grader Tatum Watson won, 7-6 (7-1), 6-3, at No. 2 singles, and sixth-grader Kayley Smith was victorious by forfeit at No. 3 singles. In doubles, eighth-grader Eliza Davis and freshman Brianna Suggs won, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 1, and freshman Abigail Griggs and seventh-grader Ayrn Head were victorious by forfeit at No. 2.
Against the Panthers, Collins’ victories came from junior Paige Kregor at No. 1 singles (6-1, 6-1), Quinn at No. 2 singles (6-2, 6-2) and Davis and Suggs at No. 1 doubles (6-2, 8-6).
The Titans, who played at Franklin County on Tuesday, travel to North Oldham on Thursday before playing Shelby County on Friday.
SCHS 3, ANDERSON COUNTY 2:Shelby County’s victories in Lawrenceburg on Friday came from junior Hailey Coffey at No. 2 singles (6-1, 6-3), sophomore Emalee Turley at No. 3 singles (6-1, 6-1) and from sophomore Jordan Rood and freshman Abbey Gowin at No. 2 doubles (7-6, 2-6, 1-0).
The Rockets host Spencer County this afternoon.
BOYS’ TENNIS: SCHS wins, Collins loses
The Rockets topped visiting Franklin County, 4-1, Monday at Clear Creek Park, led by a sweep of the three singles matches.
Freshman Jeron Russell was victorious, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 1 while his older brother Ethan Russell, a junior, triumphed, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 2 singles. At No. 3 singles sophomore Jimmy Welman won, 6-1, 6-1. Then at No. 1 doubles, junior Doug Martin and sophomore Luke Dove triumphed 6-2, 6-4.
Shelby County, which hosted Louisville Eastern on Tuesday, plays at Anderson County on Thursday.
FRANKFORT 3, COLLINS 2:The host Panthers topped the Titans on Monday. Collins’ victories came from sophomore Cy Dutton at No. 2 singles (6-1, 6-2) and seventh-grader Jared Baltzell at No. 3 singles (6-0, 6-0). Both of the Titans’ doubles teams, however, lost in three sets.
TRACK & FIELD: Male Invitational
Both the Shelby County boys’ and girls’ track & field teams placed seventh Saturday in the Male Invitational. In the boys’ meet, which was won by St. Xavier with 130.5 points, the Rockets tallied 45.5. In the girls’ meet, which was won by Male with 130.5 points, the Rockets scored 39.
Shelby's boys were led by senior Zach Shipley, who won the 300-meter hurdles (40.31 seconds). Senior Michael Barry was runner-up in the pole vault and finished third in the 110 hurdles; sophomore Jacob Gowin finished fourth in the high jump and fifth in the pole vault; and senior Deric Hyman placed seventh in the shot put. Shelby County’s 1,600 relay team of freshman Luke Brown, senior Stuart Orange, Gowin and Shipley finished seventh.
The Rockets’ girls were led by senior Jamie Bradley, who won the shot put (33 feet, 7 inches) and finished second in the discus.
Junior Kate Schaefer finished fourth in the pole vault; sophomore Olivia Matlin was sixth in the triple jump; senior Gina Stanula was seventh in the long jump and ninth in the 300 hurdles; and freshman Justus Martin placed seventh in the high jump.
The Rockets also finished fifth in the 1,600 relay (Matlin, Schaefer, senior Abby Siegel, Stanula), sixth in the 400 relay (Matlin, Schaefer, Siegel, Stanula) and seventh in the 800 relay (Matlin, sophomore Cali Mills, freshman Madison Todd, Siegel).
