The Shelby County volleyball team put up a fight early, but lost Tuesday night in straight sets in its first-round match of the 8th Region Tournament.
Oldham County swept the Rockets, 3-0 (25-20, 25-7, 25-11), ending their season in the third quarterfinal match at Simon Kenton.
“The loss isn't upsetting because we fought hard to get there,” said Shelby County Coach Felicia Pace, whose team ended the season 10-11. “I wanted the girls to play consistent from start to finish, but we didn't get it as a complete team in order to stay on the court with Oldham. They are a tough team, and you have be on your game at every moment or they will take it away from you.”
Shelby County, which has won back-to-back 30th District titles, led, 20-14, in the first set before the 16th-ranked Colonels (29-8) reeled off 11 consecutive points.
Oldham County, which played North Oldham in Thursday night's region final, carried that momentum into the final two sets, in which it outscored the Rockets, 50-18.
Sophomore Abby Wills led Shelby County’s offensive attack with four kills, and junior Rachel Timperman added three. Senior Kyndle Pace led the Rockets’ defense with 12 digs and three blocks. Wills added five digs.
