The Rockets downed host Western Hills 6-3 Tuesday in Frankfort before beating visiting Trimble County 5-2 on Wednesday at the Shelby County Athletic Complex.

“We are starting to look like a team and play together,” Shelby County Coach Kelly Cable said. “I’m pleased with how we are starting to approach hitting in an aggressive way. When we can get people on base positive things are happening. We just have to continue to stay focused for seven innings and don’t get satisfied.”

A four-run first inning and 14 hits helped the Rockets end their three-game losing streak with a win over the Wolverines (1-8).

Sophomore Sydney Wright led the way for Shelby, going 4-for-4 with two runs and three stolen bases.

Also for the Rockets, seventh-grader Elizabeth Ivers went 3-for-3 with three RBIs, and eighth-graders Brianna Waits and Hannah Webb went 3-for-4 and 2-for-4, respectively.

Wright led off the game with a single, then stole second before scoring the game’s first run on an RBI by seventh-grader Allyson Long. Ivers added a two-run single and Webb an RBI single in the inning. Shelby County then added single runs in the third and fourth frames.

Sophomore Savannah Smeaton picked up the victory on the mound. She gave up three earned runs – all in the seventh inning – on eight hits and one walk.

The Rockets (4-6) made the most of their five hits, plating three runs in the third and tallying two more in the sixth against the Raiders (0-3). Long led the way, going 2-for-3.

Trimble scored the game’s first run in the top of the third before the Rockets retaliated in the bottom of the inning. Ivers started things off with a single, and later scored on Wright’s single. Junior Kara Wiley added another RBI-single two batters later.

In the sixth Wiley reached on an error before Long followed with a double. Waits and Webb followed with RBI-ground outs.

Smeaton earned the victory again; giving up seven hits and two walks while striking out three.

Shelby County begins play in the Capital City Showcase today. The Rockets meet Christian Academy of Louisville at 6 at Franklin County before playing Springboro (Ohio) at 9 a.m. and Warren East at noon Saturday. Shelby County then hosts Danville on Monday before traveling to North Oldham on Tuesday.
