Roads slick, schools closed

UPDATE 9:40 a.m.: Black ice and a layer of snow caused numerous accidents and road blockages and created a very treacherous Tuesday morning in Shelby County. Ice and about an inch of snow caught road crews by surprise, spawning those accidents and forcing Shelby County schools to be closed. Vehicles were sliding without even moving along U.S. 60, and a car was upside down on Buck Creek Road. Long lines of backups kept vehicles from moving up and down hills. U.S 60 was more crowded with traffic because I-64 was bottled up eastbound near the Shelby County line, but backups westbound on 60 left that road nearly impassable. Surrounding counties had it worse, with black ice in Franklin County sending vehicles sliding off the road and into trees and rock walls. But in Shelbyville, crews got a jump and were able to clear roads and sidewalks. Shelby County Public Schools has postponed tonight's Martha Layne Collins Family Night at SCHS due to the weather. As of yet, no make-up date has been set. For more information throughout the day, check www.SentinelNews.com.
