With a 20 percent increase in recycling in the county this year, Shelby County experts say that local recycling efforts are helping protect the environment and are allowing the county to save thousands of dollars.
Russell Thomas, Shelby County solid waste director, said the recycling center has seen a steady increase in traffic this year.
Last year the facility recycled 232 tons of plastic, metal, glass and paper. This year the amount grew to 270 tons.
Thomas credits the change to an increased awareness about the center and the services it provides.
