The SCHS football team was already young when this season started, then the Rockets lost several players early on to injuries.
Most of those players returned by the end of year, but Shelby County never recovered from the loss of quarterback Branden Cresap for the season and several others for key games.
However, despite finishing this year with a 1-10 record, the staff and players are already preparing for next season.
“We were very pleased with the effort we got from the players all year long,” SCHS Coach Todd Shipley said. “There were several times during the season when the guys could’ve just packed it in and given up, but they fought each and every game. That gives us a lot of motivation for next year.”
Another motivating factor will be the experience gained this season. Coming into this year the Rockets had just eight players who had eiither started or played significant minutes in 2007. Shelby County graduates just 11 seniors this year.
“But next year, we’ll have 21 guys that either started or played a lot of minutes for us,” Shipley said. “Plus, we have [current] freshmen like Michael Brooks, Darian Dugle, Reese Hardin, and Andrew Page that got a lot of time on special teams and played some for us, plus a few guys that came up late. We’re going to have a lot of experience to fall back on next year. These are kids that worked hard and wanted to get better all year this year. We’re already excited to get started for next year and get this season behind us.”
