Shelbyville wins 2 games in 2 days

The Shelbyville American Legion Post 37 baseball team may be peaking at the right time once again.

Post 37 posted back-to-back victories, beating the visiting the Louisville Panthers, 7-5, Tuesday in Shelbyville before slipping past host Campbellsville, 2-1, Wednesday in its penultimate game of the regular season. Post 37 played Paducah at the University of Kentucky on Thursday in its regular-season finale. Shelbyville, the defending state champion, begins district tournament play Monday afternoon in Morehead.

“We struggled a little bit early [in the season], but it seems like we’re playing better now,” said Post 37 Manager Jim Wiley, whose team improved to 10-11 with its consecutive triumphs. “Everybody seems to be more relaxed, playing better and having more fun with it.

“We’re playing a lot better than we did a month ago, and this is a good time to do that because the tournament starts next week.”

A 6-run fifth inning propelled Post 37 to a 7-inning victory at Bobby Stratton Field.

Louisville scored single runs in the second and fourth frames to take a 2-0 lead before Shelbyville scored a half-dozen runs in the fifth, when it had five hits and benefited from one Panthers’ error.

“I thought we played real well,” Wiley said. “We hit the ball and got some good pitching.”

Logan Bailey led Post 37 at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Collins seniors-to-be Mason Jeffries and Paul Miller added two hits apiece.

Starter Lance Shelton gave up one earned run on two hits while striking out two in three innings before David Decker came on in the fourth. The recent Collins graduate earned the victory in relief. He yielded four earned runs on four hits while walking two and striking out two.

Dan Sanders and Buddy Johnson combined to hold the hosts to two hits in a 7-inning victory over Post 82.

Sanders gave up one earned run on two hits while walking one and striking out three in five innings. Johnson pitched the final two frames to pick up the save. He hit one batter and struck out two.

Shelbyville took the early lead with a run in the top of the third inning. Spencer County junior-to-be Nathan Conard led off with a single, moved to second on Nate Clifton’s sacrifice and scored on Logan Bailey’s two-out single.

Post 37 padded its lead in the fifth, when Clifton tripled with one out and scored on a Campbellsville error.

“I thought we played very well,” Wiley said.

Shelbyville will play Morehead at 5 p.m. Monday. If Post 37 wins that game, it would play at 8 p.m. Tuesday. If it loses that first game, it will play at 5 Tuesday. Ashland and Northern Kentucky are the two other teams in the district.

“The tournament is a different season,” Wiley said. “If we play like we’ve played the last two weeks, I feel good about that district tournament.”
