With the July opening deadline approaching for the Outlet Shoppes of the Bluegrass, merchants are hoping a job fair at Collins High School this afternoon will help fill the 1,000 jobs expected to be created by the mall’s opening.
The event, hosted by the Kentucky Career Center and co-developer Horizon Group Properties, will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. at the school’s gym at 801 Discovery Blvd.
“This is something we do with all our properties,” said Gina Slechta, vice president of marketing for Horizon. “Because so many stores will need employees well before their opening date, many of our retailers will be looking for a variety of positions.”
The Outlet Shoppes of the Bluegrass is a 374,000-square-foot retail center located at the corner of Buck Creek and Veechdale roads in Simpsonville, just south of Interstate 64. The new mall will be the largest outlet center in Kentucky with more than 80 retailers opening stores.
With more than four months still to go, Slechta said it takes time for employers to get the right staff in place.
“They have to go though the hiring process, which can include back ground checks, two week notices and things like that,” she said. “Once you get into those, the days can start clicking by really quickly.”
The organizers suggest that applicants come dressed for success and bring several copies of their résumé. And applicants must be 18 year or older.
“Rarely do retailers hirer anyone younger than eighteen,” Slechta said. “Most of those jobs [for those under 18] will be in the food service industry. They’re looking for applicants across the board. Every retailer has their own set specification to work with, but there will be companies looking to hirer managers, assistant managers and floor employees.”
She also noted that center will be looking to fill employee positions in security, maintenance and administration, as well. The center’s new manager Dan Davilla will be on hand to conduct interviews and meet with applicants.
The center is more than 95 percent leased now, and developers expect to announce more retail stores coming in the near future.
