Our affordable food

The cost of food in America remains affordable. According to the latest statistics by the USDA Economic Research Service, families and individuals currently spend, on average, just under 10 percent of their disposable income for their food supply for the entire year. It only takes about 37 days to pay for our annual food supply.

We must work much longer to earn disposable income for health and medical care (52 days), housing and household operation (62 days) and federal taxes (77 days) for the entire year.

The farmers of America provide us with affordable food; therefore, we have more money to spend on other tings, which boosts our whole economy and quality of life.

Our local Shelby County Farm Bureau board of directors and women's committee will be promoting this on "Food Check-Out Week," Feb. 3-9. Each director is asked to donate non-perishable food items. Our local board buys $100 worth of one-pound packages of ground beef and all of this is donated to our local food pantry here in Shelbyville for needy families.
